Sweet Briar VA ultrasound technician with patientOnce you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Sweet Briar VA, the next step is to start the procedure of selecting a school. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will furnish the proper training to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one begin? A number of individuals will start by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location must be considered when making a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this article. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are offered.

Sonogram Tech Job Description

Sweet Briar VA sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Sweet Briar VA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Sweet Briar VA ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Sweet Briar VA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Virginia or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

woman attending online sonography school in Sweet Briar VAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Sweet Briar VA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Sweet Briar home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Sweet Briar VA ultrasound tech schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Sweet Briar VA area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Sweet Briar VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Sweet Briar VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Sweet Briar medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Sweet Briar VA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Sweet Briar VA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Sweet Briar VA?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Sweet Briar Virginia, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Sweet Briar College

Sweet Briar College is a women's liberal arts college in Sweet Briar, Virginia, United States, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Lynchburg. The college is on 3,250 acres (13,152,283 m2) in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, on the former estate of the college's founder, Indiana Fletcher Williams. Sweet Briar was established in 1901 as the Sweet Briar Institute[4] and opened its doors in 1906.[5] The college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges[6] to award the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts in Teaching, and Master of Education;[7] as of June 2018 it is on "warning" status due to its fiscal-year 2017 finances.[8]

On March 3, 2015, Sweet Briar's board of directors announced that the college would be closing at the end of the summer session, citing "insurmountable financial challenges".[9] In response, a group of concerned alumnae and friends of the college formed a nonprofit organization, Saving Sweet Briar, to reverse the board's decision.[10] Saving Sweet Briar, students, parents and alumnae, faculty and staff, and the local Commonwealth Attorney all filed lawsuits to enjoin the closing, one of which reached the Virginia Supreme Court.[11] On June 20, 2015, the Virginia Attorney General announced a mediation agreement to keep Sweet Briar College open.[12][13] After replacing the board and president, the college rescinded the closing announcement.[14]

The college is named after the former plantation of Elijah Fletcher and his descendants. Fletcher was a 19th-century teacher, businessman and mayor of Lynchburg, Virginia. He married Maria Antoinette Crawford in 1813, and purchased the Sweet Briar plantation property from her aunt and uncle. The plantation was initially known as Locust Ridge; Crawford supposedly renamed it "Sweet Briar" after the roses which grew on the land. Their daughter, Indiana Fletcher, was born in 1828 in Lynchburg.

Indiana attended the Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, Doane Academy, and later toured Europe with her brother and sister. She met James Henry Williams, a student at Union Theological Seminary in 1858, and after reuniting in Virginia following the American Civil War, they were married in 1865. Their daughter, Maria Georgiana "Daisy" Williams, was born in 1867. At Elijah Fletcher's death, Indiana inherited the plantation. James Williams gave up his initial career as a clergyman to maintain the property. Daisy Williams died at the age of 16 in 1884. Both James and Indiana Fletcher-Williams were devastated at her death, and James expressed a wish in his own will that a school might be established in honor of Daisy. William died in 1889, leaving his entire estate to his wife, and Indiana's brother Sidney also gave her additional property upon his death in 1898. When Indiana died in 1900, she bequeathed Sweet Briar plantation to become a school for young women.[15][16]
