Cannon Beach OR ultrasound technician with patientNow that you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Cannon Beach OR, it’s time to start the procedure of choosing a college. First, you must find the ideal program that will furnish the necessary instruction to become a qualified professional. And given that a number of states do require that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each school so that you can assess and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? Most students will start by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost must be considered when making a decision, but there are other important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internships. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education options that are available.

Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Cannon Beach OR sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Cannon Beach OR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Cannon Beach OR ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Cannon Beach OR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Oregon or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

woman attending online sonography school in Cannon Beach ORAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Cannon Beach OR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Cannon Beach home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Cannon Beach OR ultrasound tech schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Cannon Beach OR area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Cannon Beach OR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Cannon Beach OR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Cannon Beach health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Cannon Beach OR residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cannon Beach OR area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Cannon Beach OR?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Cannon Beach Oregon, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

The first recorded journey by an American to what is now Cannon Beach was made by William Clark, one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in early 1805. The expedition was wintering at Fort Clatsop, roughly 20 miles (32 km) to the north near the mouth of the Columbia River. In December 1805, two members of the expedition returned to camp with blubber from a whale that had beached several miles south, near the mouth of Ecola Creek. Clark later explored the region himself.[6] From a spot near the western cliffs of the headland he saw "...the grandest and most pleasing prospects which my eyes ever surveyed, in front of a boundless Ocean..." That viewpoint, later dubbed "Clark's Point of View," can be accessed by a hiking trail from Indian Beach in Ecola State Park.

Clark and several of his companions, including Sacagawea, completed a three-day journey on January 10, 1806, to the site of the beached whale. They encountered a group of Native Americans from the Tillamook tribe who were boiling blubber for storage. Clark and his party met with them and successfully bartered for 300 pounds (140 kg) of blubber and some whale oil before returning to Fort Clatsop.[7] There is a wooden whale sculpture commemorating the encounter between Clark's group and the Tillamooks in a small park at the northern end of Hemlock Street.[8]

Clark applied the name "Ekoli" to what is now Ecola Creek.[9]Ehkoli is a Chinook word for "whale".[9] Early settlers later renamed the creek "Elk Creek", and a community with the same name formed nearby.[10]

In 1846, a cannon from the US Navy schooner Shark washed ashore just north of Arch Cape, a few miles south of the community. The schooner hit land while attempting to cross the Columbia Bar, also known as the "Graveyard of the Pacific." The cannon, rediscovered in 1898, eventually inspired a name change for the growing community. In 1922, Elk Creek was redubbed Cannon Beach (after the name of the beach that extends south of Ecola Creek for 8 miles (13 km), ending at Arch Cape) at the insistence of the Post Office Department because the name was frequently confused with Eola. Elk Creek itself was renamed Ecola Creek to honor William Clark's original name.[10]
