So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school in order to evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? Many prospective students will begin by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Kingston NY sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Kingston NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Kingston NY ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Kingston NY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

woman attending online sonography school in Kingston NYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Kingston NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Kingston home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Kingston NY ultrasound tech schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Kingston NY area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Kingston NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Kingston NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Kingston health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Kingston NY home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Kingston NY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Kingston NY?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Kingston New York, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Kingston, New York

Kingston is a city in and the county seat of Ulster County, New York, United States. It is 91 miles (146 km) north of New York City and 59 miles (95 km) south of Albany. It became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections. Passenger rail service has since ceased, and many of the older buildings are part of three historic districts, such as the Stockade District uptown, the Midtown Neighborhood Broadway Corridor, and the Rondout-West Strand Historic District downtown.

As early as 1614, the Dutch had set up a factorij (trading post) at Ponckhockie, at the junction of the Rondout Creek and the Hudson River. The first recorded permanent settler in what would become the city of Kingston, was Thomas Chambers, who came from the area of Rensselaerswyck in 1653. The place was called Esopus after the local Esopus tribe. As more settlers arrived, tensions developed between the Esopus and the Dutch, in part due to the Dutch selling alcohol to the young Esopus men.[3]

In the spring of 1658, Peter Stuyvesant, Director-General of New Amsterdam, arrived and advised the residents that if they wished to remain they must re-locate to high ground and build a stockade. Tensions continued between the Esopus and the settlers, eventually leading to the Esopus Wars. In 1661 the settlement was granted a charter as a separate municipality; Stuyvesant named it Wiltwijck (Wiltwyck).[3] It was not until 1663 that the Dutch ended the four-year conflict with the Esopus through a coalition of Dutch settlers, Wappinger and Mohawk. Wiltwyck was one of three large Hudson River settlements in New Netherland, the other two being Beverwyck, now Albany, and New Amsterdam, now New York City. With the English seizure of New Netherland in 1664, relations between the Dutch settlers and the English soldiers garrisoned there were often strained. In 1669, Wiltwyck was renamed Kingston, in honor of the family seat of Governor Lovelace's mother.[3]

In 1777, Kingston became the first capital of New York. During the summer of 1777, when the New York State constitution was written, New York City was occupied by British troops and Albany (then the second largest settlement in New York and capital of the newly independent State of New York) was under threat of attack by the British. The seat of government was moved to Kingston, which was deemed safer. However, the British never reached Albany, having been stopped at Saratoga, but they did reach Kingston. On October 13, 1777, the city was burned by British troops[4] moving up river from New York City, and disembarking at the mouth of the Rondout Creek at "Ponckhockie". The denizens of Kingston knew of the oncoming fleet. By the time the British arrived, the residents and government officials had removed to Hurley, New York. The area was a major granary for the colonies at the time, so the British burned large amounts of wheat and all but one or two of the buildings. Kingston celebrates and re-enacts the 1777 burning of the city by the British every other year (2019 is the next "burning" of Kingston), in a citywide theatrical staging of the event that begins at the Rondout.
