How to Enroll in the Right Ultrasound Technician Degree Program near Dracut Massachusetts

Dracut MA ultrasound technician with patientOnce you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Dracut MA, the next step is to start the procedure of selecting a college. First, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the proper education to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each college in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? Many individuals will begin by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Dracut MA sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Dracut MA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Dracut MA ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Dracut MA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Massachusetts or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

woman attending online sonography school in Dracut MAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Dracut MA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Dracut home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Dracut MA ultrasound tech schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Dracut MA area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Dracut MA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Dracut MA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Dracut medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Dracut MA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Dracut MA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Dracut MA?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Dracut Massachusetts, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Dracut, Massachusetts

Before Europeans arrived in the mid-17th century, Dracut and the surrounding area were known as "Augumtoocooke". Important Pennacook Indian settlements were served by fishing at Pawtucket Falls on the Merrimack River and abundant game in the surrounding marsh areas.[1] From the late 16th to mid-17th centuries, the powerful sachem Passaconaway and his family spent much of their lives on this land.

Europeans began to settle in the area around 1653, and established the town of Chelmsford, incorporated in 1655, on the opposite side of the Merrimack River from modern Dracut. In October 1665, Bess, wife of Nobb How and daughter of Passaconaway, sold the Augumtoocooke land to Captain John Evered, also known as Webb of Draucutt of Norfolk County (the Webb family is associated closely with the town of Dreycott Folliott in Wiltshire, England[2]) for four yards of Duffill and one pound of tobacco.[1] Webb had months earlier sold 11,000 acres (45 km2) of the land — which he did not then own — to Samuel Varnum for 400 four hundred pounds; the deed for "Drawcutt upon Mirrimack" was dated 1664.[3] Webb also sold land to Richard Shatswell, who traded it to Edward Colburn (also spelled "Coburn" or "Colborne") for his home and land in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Colburn and his family were probably the first settlers in Dracut who owned land with the intention of permanently living on it. (Samuel Varnum lived on the Chelmsford side of the Merrimack River.)[4][5][6]

Even though this area, now known to the new settlers as Dracut (Draucutt), was across the Merrimack River from the Chelmsford town center, they agreed to pay taxes and relied on Chelmsford for protection, according to 1667 Middlesex Court documents.[7] By summer 1669, however, protection became too costly and difficult, so the Chelmsford Mayor Henchman declared:

On the morning of March 18, 1676, the Wamesit Indians burned down four of Edward Colburne's buildings, then attacked Samuel Varnum and family as they crossed the river to milk the cows grazing in the Dracut pastures. The Indians fired upon their boat, killing Samuel's two sons, and one died in his daughter's arms as she sat behind him. The accompanying soldiers and Samuel fired back, but the Indians fled.[3]
