First, you have to find the ideal program that will furnish the proper instruction to become a skilled professional. So it’s very important that you investigate each school so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? Many prospective students will begin by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location should be taken into account when making a decision, but there are additional important factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Belfast ME sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Belfast ME hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Belfast ME ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Belfast ME hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Maine or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

woman attending online sonography school in Belfast MEAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Belfast ME outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Belfast home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Belfast ME ultrasound tech schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Belfast ME area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Belfast ME health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Belfast ME clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Belfast health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Belfast ME home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Belfast ME area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Belfast ME?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Belfast Maine, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Belfast, Maine

Belfast is a city in Waldo County, Maine, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 6,668. Located at the mouth of the Passagassawakeag River estuary on Belfast Bay and Penobscot Bay. Belfast is the county seat of Waldo County.[4] The seaport has a wealth of antique architecture in several historic districts, and remains popular with tourists.

The area was once territory of the Penobscot tribe of Abenaki Native Americans, which each summer visited the seashore to hunt for fish, shellfish and seafowl. In 1630, it became part of the Muscongus Patent, which granted rights for English trading posts with the Native Americans, especially for the lucrative fur trade. About 1720, General Samuel Waldo of Boston bought the Muscongus Patent, which had evolved into outright ownership of the land, and was thereafter known as the Waldo Patent.[5]

Waldo died in 1759, and his heirs would sell the plantation of Passagassawakeag (named after its river) to 35 Scots-Irish proprietors from Londonderry, New Hampshire. Renamed Belfast after Belfast, Northern Ireland, it was first settled in 1770, and incorporated as a town in 1773. The village was mostly abandoned during the Revolution while British forces occupied Bagaduce (now Castine).[6] The British military burned Belfast in 1779, then held it for five days in September 1814 during the War of 1812.[7]

Following the war, the seaport rebuilt and thrived. It was a port of entry, and designated county seat of Waldo County in 1827, although land would be set off in 1845 to form part of Searsport. Belfast was incorporated on August 17, 1850 as a city, the 8th in Maine, adopting its charter on April 3, 1852.[8][9][10] It developed into a shipbuilding center, producing hundreds of three, four and five masted schooners. Materials for wooden boat construction were shipped down the Penobscot River from Bangor, the lumber capital of North America during the later 19th century.[7]
