Most individuals will begin by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Valrico FL sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Valrico FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Valrico FL ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Valrico FL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

woman attending online sonography school in Valrico FLAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Valrico FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Valrico home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Valrico FL ultrasound tech schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Valrico FL area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Valrico FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Valrico FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Valrico health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Valrico FL home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Valrico FL area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Valrico FL?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Valrico Florida, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Valrico, Florida

Before the Civil War, the area was known as "Long Pond" and consisted of several cotton plantations. It was renamed "Valrico", meaning "rich valley" in Spanish, in the 1880s when William G. Tousey, a philosophy professor from Tufts College, purchased property in the area. In 1890, an influx of immigrants arrived, following the construction of the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad through the area.

When the railroad was completed, Tousey began building up the community with retail stores, streets, and a bank. In 1895, a major freeze halted these developments, and the population began to dwindle. Nonetheless, the town continued to press on, with a schoolhouse being completed in 1896. The population continued to fall drastically, from 100 people in 1893 to only 50 in 1911.

This setback did not deter local landowners from pushing forward with the town's development. Between 1910-1914 Judge Hamner, Governor Van Sant, D. Humbird, W.H., S.C. Phipps and W.F. Miller started an improvement project along Hopewell Road, later designated SR 60. W.F. Miller, serving as president of the Valrico Improvement Association, raised $3,500 to erect the Valrico Civic Center, now known as the James McCabe Theatre. The area's first general store was opened by Lovett Brandon in 1912.

Valrico once again suffered a major blow during the stock market crash of 1929, which saw nearly every business in the town shut down. Not until the mid-1950s did the town begin to see growth again, primarily due to the connection of SR 60 to Tampa's Adamo Drive, placing Valrico right along a major Florida thoroughfare.[4]
