Desert Center CA ultrasound technician with patientNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Desert Center CA, it’s time to start the process of selecting a college. To begin with, you must find the ideal program that will provide the necessary training to become a skilled professional. And given that some states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you research each school so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? Most potential students will start by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional critical factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Desert Center CA sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Desert Center CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Desert Center CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

woman attending online sonography school in Desert Center CAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Desert Center CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Desert Center home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Desert Center CA ultrasound tech schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Desert Center CA area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Desert Center CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Desert Center CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Desert Center health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Desert Center CA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Desert Center CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Desert Center CA?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Desert Center California, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Desert Center, California

Desert Center is a census designated place in the Colorado Desert in Riverside County, California. It is in southern California, between the cities of Indio and Blythe at the junction of Interstate 10 and State Route 177 (Desert Center-Rice Road), about halfway between Phoenix and Los Angeles. The ZIP Code is 92239, and the community is in telephone area codes 442 and 760. The elevation is 656 feet (200 m). The population was 204 at the 2010 census.

The town was founded in 1921 by Stephen A. Ragsdale, also known as "Desert Steve", and his wife, Lydia. Ragsdale was an itinerant preacher and cotton farmer, originally from Arkansas. In 1915, he left his farm in the Palo Verde Valley along the Colorado River to attend to some business in Los Angeles. The road between Phoenix and Los Angeles was mostly sand, and Ragsdale's vehicle broke down near a place called Gruendyke's Well. This featured a hand-dug well and was inhabited by a prospector named Bill Gruendyke. Gruendyke rescued Ragsdale and gave him food, shelter, and water until his vehicle was repaired and he could resume his journey to Los Angeles.

Upon his return, Ragsdale bought out Gruendyke and moved his family to the remote spot, where they constructed a small shack with a lean-to that served as a repair garage. A Model T truck was modified to serve as a tow car. Gasoline was pumped by hand from a 55-gallon drum. Lydia served food and refreshments to thirsty and weary travelers. In spite of the remote location—50 miles (80 km) in any direction from anything—the Ragsdales prospered. Ragsdale named his outpost "Desert Center". In 1921, it was announced that the sand road running through Desert Center would be relocated about 5 miles (8.0 km) north, straightened, paved, and named U.S. Route 60, a modern "high-speed" highway. Ragsdale abandoned "old Desert Center" and built a poured-concrete café in the adobe style with an attached gasoline station and a huge service garage. Across the road, a series of wooden structures were built, including a market (which at one time was the largest Coleman camping equipment dealer in the country), and a post office. He also built several cabins for travelers, and a large "plunge" (swimming pool) next to the café where travelers could escape the desert heat.

Ragsdale was a desert eccentric of the first order, and his advertising for Desert Center in publications such as Desert Magazine reflected his personality: "U Need Us—We Need U", "Our Main Street is 100-miles long!",[3] "We lost our keys...we can't close!" (a reference to the fact that the café has been open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since it opened in 1921), "Free Room and Board Every Day The Sun Doesn't Shine In Desert Center", "If You Don't Believe Me, You Can Go To Hell, or Visit Me in Desert Center in August! Nuf sed, Steve".
