Bay Minette AL ultrasound technician with patientSince you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Bay Minette AL, the next step is to begin the procedure of selecting a college. To begin with, you must find the right program that will furnish the proper instruction to become a qualified professional. And because a number of states do require that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school so that you can assess and compare your options. But exactly where does one start? Most students will start by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internship programs. These and other qualifications will be addressed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training programs that are available.

Sonographer Occupation Summary

Bay Minette AL sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Bay Minette AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Bay Minette AL ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Bay Minette AL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alabama or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

woman attending online sonography school in Bay Minette ALAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Bay Minette AL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Bay Minette home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Bay Minette AL ultrasound tech schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bay Minette AL area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Bay Minette AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Bay Minette AL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Bay Minette health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Bay Minette AL residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bay Minette AL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

After being transferred to the town of Blakeley in 1810, the county seat was later moved to the city of Daphne in 1868. In 1900, by an act of the legislature of Alabama, the county seat was authorized for relocation to the city of Bay Minette; however, the city of Daphne resisted relocation. The citizens of Bay Minette moved the county records from Daphne in the middle of the night on October 11–12, 1901[4] and delivered them to the city of Bay Minette - where the Baldwin County seat remains to this day.[5] A mural for the new post office built in 1937 was commissioned by the WPA and painted by Hilton Leech of Bridgeport, Connecticut, to commemorate this event.[4]

In September 2011, the town attempted to enact a program called "Operation Restore Our Community". It would have allowed those convicted of a misdemeanor to substitute imprisonment with mandatory church attendance for one year.[6] However, this program was challenged due to violating separation of church and state, and the program's start was delayed for judicial review.[7] It appears to have been scrapped.
