Bigelow AR ultrasound technician with patientNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Bigelow AR, it’s time to start the procedure of choosing a college. First, you have to find the right program that will furnish the appropriate training to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school so that you can assess and compare your options. But exactly where does one start? A number of individuals will begin by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost must be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in detail later in this article. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Bigelow AR sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bigelow AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Bigelow AR ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Bigelow AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

woman attending online sonography school in Bigelow ARAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Bigelow AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Bigelow home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Bigelow AR ultrasound tech schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bigelow AR area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bigelow AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Bigelow AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Bigelow medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Bigelow AR residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Bigelow AR area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
