Gordon GA ultrasound technician with patientNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Gordon GA, it’s time to start the procedure of picking a school. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will provide the proper instruction to become a skilled professional. And because a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each school in order to assess and compare your choices. But just where does one start? A number of prospective students will begin by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this article. But first, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Gordon GA sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Gordon GA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Gordon GA ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Gordon GA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Georgia or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

woman attending online sonography school in Gordon GAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Gordon GA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Gordon home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Gordon GA ultrasound tech schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Gordon GA area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Gordon GA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Gordon GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Gordon healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Gordon GA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Gordon GA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Fort Gordon

Fort Gordon, formerly known as Camp Gordon, is a United States Army installation established in October 1941. It is the current home of the United States Army Signal Corps , United States Army Cyber Corps, and Cyber Center of Excellence. It was once the home of The Provost Marshal General School and Civil Affairs School. The fort is located slightly southeast of Grovetown, Georgia and southwest of the city Augusta, Georgia. The main component of the post is the Advanced Individual Training for Signal Corps military occupational specialties. In 1966–68 the Army's Signal Officer Candidate School (located at Fort Monmouth during World War II and the Korean War) graduated over 2,200 Signal officers. Signals Intelligence has become more visible and comprises more and more of the fort's duties.

The United States Army established many war-training camps during World War I. Chamblee, northeast of Atlanta, was selected for one of the state's largest army cantonments. It was named Camp Gordon in honor of John Brown Gordon, who was a major general in the Confederate army, a Georgia governor, a U.S. senator, and a businessman. The camp opened in July 1917, becoming a training site and home of the famous 82nd Airborne Division.[1] The division was composed of men from several different states, but men from Georgia made up almost half its number. This camp was in operation until the sale of real estate and buildings was ordered in 1920. It was abandoned in September 1921. During WWI the US Army Camp Hancock was located in Augusta, Georgia in the general vicinity of the current Daniel Field. Camp Hancock was the home of the 28th Infantry Division from Pennsylvania. Camp Hancock was abandoned and turned over to a caretaker detachment March 27, 1919. From 1919 until 1941, there was no army installation named Camp Gordon in existence, nor was there an installation located near Augusta, Georgia. [2][3][4]

Camp Gordon was approved as the name for a WWII division training camp which began construction in July 1941. The U.S. War Department approved a contract to construct facilities on a new training area near Augusta, in Richmond County, Georgia that had been selected several months earlier. A groundbreaking and flag-raising ceremony took place in October. In response to the attack on Pearl Harbor Colonel Herbert W. Schmidt, camp commander, moved his small staff from his temporary office in the Augusta post office building to the unfinished headquarters building at Camp Gordon on 9 December 1941 and the 4th Infantry Division began to establish operations there.

The post was home to three divisions during the war: the 4th Infantry, the 26th Infantry, and the 10th Armored. From October 1943 to January 1945 Camp Gordon served as an internment camp for foreign prisoners of war. From May 1945 until April 1946 the U.S. Army Personnel and Separation Center processed nearly 86,000 personnel for discharge from the Army.[5]
