First, you have to find the ideal program that will furnish the necessary education to become a skilled professional. So it’s extremely important that you research each college so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? Many potential students will begin by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be discussed more in depth later in this article. Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Standish ME sonographer testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Standish ME clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Standish ME ultrasound tech testing pregnant womanSonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Standish ME hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Maine or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Standish ME outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Standish home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Standish ME ultrasound tech schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Standish ME area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Standish ME health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Standish ME clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Standish health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Standish ME residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Standish ME area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Enrolling in an Ultrasound Tech Program near Standish ME?

If you are considering a Sonography Tech School near Standish Maine, following is some interesting background information about the location of your new school campus.

Standish, Maine

Standish is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 10,139 at the 2015 census.[4] It includes the villages of Standish Corner, Sebago Lake Village and Steep Falls, and the localities known as Richville, Standish Neck and Two Trails. Standish is part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area.

This was once hunting and fishing territory of the Abenaki tribe, whose main village was at Pequawket (now Fryeburg) up the Pequawket Trail (now Route 113). In 1750, the Massachusetts General Court granted the township to Captain Moses Pearson and Captain Humphrey Hobbs, together with their respective companies, for services during the French and Indian Wars.[5]

It was to be called Pearson and Hobbs Town, but Hobbs died and none of his company took possession. In 1752, the land was surveyed and divided into 30-acre (120,000 m2) lots, although some soldiers sold their rights for whatever they could get. Those that did settle found their cabins razed by Indians trying to drive them away. In response, the veterans built at Standish Corner a stockaded fort, which provided protection until Indian hostilities ceased in 1759 with the Fall of Quebec. Pearsontown Plantation was incorporated as Standish on November 30, 1785.[6][7] The town is named in honor of Captain Myles Standish.[7]

Much of Standish is sandy plains covered with pine, yet farmers found considerable arable land. Watermills at various streams produced lumber, headings, shooks, barrel staves, carriages, clothing, flour, ice, plaster and packing boxes. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal opened in 1832, increasing trade between Sebago Lake and Portland. It was followed by the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad, which on September 12, 1870 began regular passenger service between Portland and Sebago Lake Station.[8] Tourists could arrive by train in the morning, ride a side-wheel steamboat the whole length of the lakes, then return to the city by evening. The cost of the excursion in 1876 was $1.75 from Portland to Naples, and $2.00 from Portland to Bridgton, North Bridgton or Harrison. Standish also had railroad depots at Richville and Steep Falls. In 1998, Frye Island in Sebago Lake was set off and incorporated as a separate town. Today, Standish is both a recreational area and suburb of Portland.
